World Sailing Offshore Committee meets today as ORC and IRC clash

There does not appear to be any de-escalation of the long-running dispute between the IRC and the ORC that leaked into the public domain this week.

The world’s two top scoring administrators are locked in a war of words over staging the 2022 World Championships.

The latest is an admission by ORC that it believes the 2018 combined ORC/IRC event in The Hague, which featured average ORC and IRC scores, was a “failed solution”.

A World Sailing Offshore Committee has remained silent since the matter was aired this week. The governing body is program meeting today and there is probably only one item at the top of the agenda, but even then it is not clear if oil can be poured on these troubled waters through this virtual meeting.

ORC’s Bruno Finzi

Meanwhile, Bruno Finzi from ORC responded to Michael Boyd’s “shocked and disappointed” IRC salvo on Tuesday with an olive branch of 2023? Full statement below:

Statement below from Bruno Finzi and the ORC Steering Committee in response to yesterday’s IRC press release:

We are sorry that the IRC Board has expressed shock and disappointment at our decision with YCCS to publish the Notice of Race for next year’s ORC Worlds and has chosen to misrepresent our dialogue in his press release.

An email was sent on October 4 explaining our frustration with their insistence on reproducing what we knew was a failed score averaging solution in ORC and IRC, as was done in 2018 in The Hague. The feedback from sailors at this event was very negative, and even the minutes of the IRC Congress 2021 admit this as well.

We believe we need to listen to sailors about what is acceptable to them and not use an ineffective scoring solution based solely on politics. Our proposal to use ORC notation for inshore races and IRC notation for offshore races seems to be the appropriate solution and we still believe it would be acceptable to the riding.

So we don’t see why the decision of the YCCS and the ORC to publish the ORC Worlds 2022 Notice of Race on October 21 could be a surprise: it’s only 8 months before the start of this event. We also informed them of this on October 4th, their IRC Board meeting was held on October 6th and the IRC Congress was held on October 16th, and yet we still have not heard nothing from them before our announcement.

Either way, we are available to take up these discussions for a combined ORC/IRC event in 2023.
