World Sailing has extended for three years the Special Events agreement with the SSL (Star Sailors League), an international regatta circuit designed to promote athletes and sport in an innovative and simple format.
Special event status ensures that the world governing body officially recognizes and sanctions the event.
World Sailing Special Events showcase the best that sailing has to offer. High performance and innovation are at the forefront of all special events as they set the benchmark for the sport. Additionally, world-class officiating, broadcast and sustainability initiatives enhance the positioning of the sport globally.
World Sailing special events include the America’s Cup, SailGP, Ocean Race, World Match Racing Tour, Global Kitesports Association World Freestyle Tour and SSL.
The SSL became a special event in 2017 and the three-year extension will cover the SSL Finals and the SSL Gold Cup.
The SSL Finals is the highlight of the year and is reserved for the top 10 skippers in the SSL rankings as well as 15 exceptional sailors invited by SSL based on their sailing pedigree. 25 top teams of sailors from different classes compete each year in a qualifying and final round, vying for glory in the SSL Finals, being crowned champions of the season and a share of the CHF 200,000 prize pool.
The SSL Gold Cup was launched in 2019 and is the latest innovation from SSL. This will see the team of top sailing athletes from each nation teamed up as one crew, as in the soccer world cup, then compete aboard 47ft long high performance monohulls to establish “the best nation of sailing in the world”.
