KINGSTON — The Hudson River Maritime Museum Sailing School announces that the 2022 Youth Sailing Programs are now open for enrollment. Young sailors of all skill levels will have the opportunity to get out on the water and learn about maritime science during shore sessions.
A number of popular classes are back this year and will offer more sessions. In the Building & Sailing Boats class, students will spend time in the wooden boat school as they build and then launch their own boat into nearby Rondout Creek. The new Reach/STEM series welcomes novice sailors with 20 hours of STEM-focused sailing activities. A summary of the classes appears below:
Reach/STEM – A new series of courses for young people (10-14 years old) accommodating beginner sailors as well as more experienced students. Certified US Sailing instructors deliver 20 hours of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) curriculum with hands-on experiences in the real world of sailing.
Building and Sailing Boats – Students (ages 10-17) will be introduced to woodworking, boat building and sailing in this 4-day course encompassing a range of skills and activities focused on STEM. Participants will develop skills and experience of cooperation, teamwork, self-confidence and independence while learning to build and sail boats.
Introduction to Sailing for Youth (Ages 6-8) – A new class for 6-8 year olds that immerses them in the basics of sailing in a stimulating environment where everyone becomes comfortable and confident onboard boat. Young sailors will be safe, have fun and learn the concepts of sailing while making new friends and having new experiences.
Youth Sailing Program – Six week-long youth sailing experiences for students aged 9-17. Sessions will take place from July 11 to August 19, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sessions are taught by certified US Sailing instructors and focus on safety, fun and learning. Mixed age groups and experience levels allow experienced students to take on leadership roles. New sailors will learn from instructors and their peers while progressing at their own pace.
Early registration for classes is recommended. Students who register before March 15 can take advantage of last season’s rates which will increase after this date. Safety is always a priority at HRMM Sailing School and information on how we keep people safe is available on the school website.
