Leigh Youth is world sailing champion

A KEEN sailor from Leigh represented Great Britain in World Sailing and won in her category.

Florence Brellisford, 18, was selected to represent her country at the World Youth Championships in Oman in December following a British selection in August.

Florence, who is in her first year studying geophysics at the University of Bristol, competed successfully with her regular teammate Emily Mueller in the championships, to win the Female Skiff class in a 29-inch boat.

The challenge was demanding, with three races per day repeated over five days, resulting in fifteen races from which a winning pair is named.

“It was one of the best weeks of my life,” Florence said, “and we didn’t expect to win!”

A sailor with her family from a young age, Florence became a member of the Essex Yacht Club (EYC) at the age of four.

A student at Westcliff High School for Girls, she learned the ropes of running during a fun cadet week at EYC, and she has never looked back.

Reflecting on her recent success, Florence also expressed her thanks for the invaluable experience she gained there: “Without the YEC, I would never have come this far.

Now Florence has her sights set on continuing training at Weymouth, with the possibility of starting an Olympic campaign in a 49er.

But she is also passionate about her studies in geophysics, and is particularly interested in meteorology: “knowledge of the wind and clouds is useful to me when I sail! She adds.
