End of the suspension of the Jules Verne Trophy round the world sailing record

On November 1, 2021, Dona Bertarelli, Yann Guichard and their team began the wait for a fourth attempt at the Jules Verne Trophy round the world sailing record. Since that date, there has not been a favorable weather window for the crew of the maxi-trimaran Sails of Change to set off with a real chance of breaking the record. Yesterday, Dona Bertarelli and Yann Guichard announced the end of Spindrift’s stand-by and plan to renew the attempt later this year.

The primary challenge of the Sails of Change maxi-trimaran is to make a very rapid passage from the island of Ouessant to the equator (in the record time of 4 days 19 hours and 57 minutes established by Spindrift itself in 2019). The crew will then have to reach the southern tip of Africa in less than 12 days, to be equal to the previous record. With this in mind, since November 1, 2021, Yann Guichard (skipper), Benjamin Schwartz (navigator) and Jean-Yves Bernot (router ashore) have been analyzing the weather to determine the ideal configuration for linking these two sequences. . However, during the winter, the weather scenario was not once favorable to the start of the attempt.

Jean-Yves Bernot also specifies that a late entry into the Great South is not recommended: “The austral summer is gradually drawing to a close. Sailing conditions in this area are becoming more and more complicated with the cold, gales and heavy seas. With too much bad weather comes the increased risk of sustaining damage, and it is more difficult to maintain the high average speeds needed to break the record.”

In this context, Dona Bertarelli and Yann Guichard have decided to cancel their team’s reserve for the Jules Verne Trophy record.
