Believe it or not, Buffalo’s sailing programs are gearing up for the 2022 sailing season. In the past, we’ve talked about a number of sailing programs that offer limitless ways to get people on the water. The Buffalo Yacht Club Foundation (BYC Foundation) is no exception.

“The Buffalo Yacht Club Foundation offers many ways for members of the Buffalo community to join us on the water,” said Leah Trow, who leads the JR Sailing program. “In the fall and spring, we offer a high school sailing program for children in grades 7-12. No experience (or membership) is required to participate in a BYCF program. Practices are Monday, Wednesday, Friday or Tuesday, Thursday, Friday from 3:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. We currently have over 60 participating sailors from 15 local schools.

If you’ve ever ventured to LaSalle Park during the summer, chances are you’ve seen the junior navigators on the water, learning the ropes. But the juniors are not the only ones to benefit from these programs.

“During the summer we have our Summer Junior Sailing, which lasts eight weeks in July and August. We offer five different classes for children aged 6 to 17. Last summer we had an average of 50 children on the water with us every week. On Saturday mornings in July and August, we offer Adult Sailing Lessons from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Participants can learn to navigate boats ranging in size from 22 to 36 feet in length. In addition, from late May to October, we offer one-to-one sailing lessons lasting two hours for up to four people.

And There you go. For those who hope to better master sailing this summer, the BYC Foundation has what you need. After all, living on a body of water as glorious as Lake Erie, it would be a shame not to take full advantage of this type of aquatic activity.
